Issue 75, one of the best this magazine has ever produced was dedicated to reviewing the nineties. I sincerely hope, pray, nay: DEMAND, that Terrorizer repeats this feat with an issue dedicated to the noughties. More importantly it should include as per issue 75, the essential 100 albums of the decade. Therefore in a rare burst of generosity which has nothing to do with avoiding writing an essay, I have taken it upon myself to help Terrorizer by compiling a list of 40 essential albums from the past decade. Why 40? Well beyond that I started to get into personal faves. Instead I've based my list on albums I believe impacted our ideas of metal, spawned new genres (whether good or bad) or were considered pinnacles in a band's career. I've also ltd my list to one album per artist which made this task bloody difficult (try choosing one Isis, Mastodon, Enslaved, BAN). I'll happily admit it's not complete, I know next to nothing about deathcore, folk, trad or power metal and I'll leave it to Spiny and Malibu to comment on the thrash revival. I'm sure this could be accused of yet another pointless list making thread but it was fun, and interesting to see that whilst this decade hasn't been as innovative as the nineties, quite a few classic albums have been released. Oh yeah, because I can't resist, I've included 10 albums from the p.e./noise/neofolk world that Terrorizer should, but probably won't, include. In alphabetical order: 1. Akercocke - Choronzon 2. Alcest - Souvenirs d'un outre monde 3. Anaal Nathrakh - the Codex Necro 4. Arch Enemy - Wages of Sin 5. Blut aus Nord - MoRT 6. Blood for Blood - Outlaw Anthems 7. Celtic Frost - Monotheist 8. Converge - Jane Doe 9. Cynic - Traced in Air 10. Deathspell Omega - Si Monumentum Requires, Circumspice 11. Drudkh - Blood in Our Wells 12. Earth - Hex 13. Electric Wizard - Dopethrone 14. Enslaved - Ruun 15. Fantomas - Directors Cut 16. Genghis Tron - Board Up the House 17. Gojira - From Sirius to Mars 18. Green Carnation - Light of Day, Day of Darkness 19. High on Fire - Surrounded by Thieves 20. Isis - Oceanic 21. Killing Joke - S/T 22. Killswitch Engage - Alive or Just Breathing 23. Leviathan - Whoracles of Terror 24. Mastodon - Remission 25. Meshuggah - Catch 33 26. Napalm Death - Enemy of the Music Business 27. Neurosis - Eye of Every Storm 28. Nile - Black Seeds of Vengeance 29. Opeth - Blackwater Park 30. I might make a list of my own later, but for now I think that Surrounded by Thieves, Oceanic, Remission and 00 Void should be replaced by Blessed Black Wings, Panopticon, Leviathan and White1 respectively. I'd put in something by Clutch and Nasum as well.

Oceanic is certainly more worthy than Panopticon; even if you prefer latter, I think the former's influence is bigger. I'd add Jesu's self-titled to the list as well.

I wholeheartedkly agree with this except I'd pick Black One over White1.

00 Void certainly isn't the best, but it was the first time many of us were introduced to Sunn o))) and therefore it's impact was greater. By the time you reached the white albums the impact was lessened though they were probably better works.

Clutch should be there, embarassed I missed it. Stupid slimline digipaks made it easy to miss. Considered Doomsword but didn't think many would have agreed! All three albums are inccredibly good.

Definitely these two. And as far as Clutch albums go I'd be more likely to go for Pure Rock Fury or Blast Tyrant than Beale Street or Robot Hive.

I think that's a pretty good list. I personally would choose 'Still Life' over 'Blackwater Park', 'In Their Darkened Shrines' over 'Black Seeds Of Vengeance' and 'Hosannas From The Basement Of Hell' over Killing Joke's self titled. And I think I'm one of the few who doesn't get Alcest.

Perhaps i'm the confused one, but it seemed to me that albums were being picked because they were personal favourites instead of being chosen because they had really made a big impact or were pushing genre boundaries which was the initial idea

Ah, well, maybe that was *an* initial idea, but when the Rizer end of 00s top 100 or whatever comes out it'll be personal favourites that get voted for, and unashamedly so! Yeah I like Whitehouse, was madly into them for a couple of years, they were my second ever Terrorizer interview! I bought every single CD reissue of theirs for old-fashioned CD prices like £14.99. I tried to find more power electronics and death industrial with anything like their impact and couldn't, except of course mid-90s Sutcliffe Jugend.

Most power electronics seem to rip off Whitehouse or Sutcliffe Jugend from what I've heard, not only sound but lyrically and visually. I thought 'This is the Truth' was immense. Good to see it mentioned earlier in the thread

Me too, pricey fuckers at times, their albums! No, there is nothing like them...

I also think Deftones - White Pony should be included. I thought it was last decade but it came out in 2000. in terms of p.e. sounding like SJ or Whitehouse, that's why I'd vote for NTT or Organised Resistance. NTT really did take the pe format and alter it, adding more depth and layers than usual, the synths giving it a more emotional feel. Organised Resistance was the starting point (in release date terms) that spawned white power electronics, moving away from the ambivalence of Grey Wolves/Con-dom. Whilst sonically it might not be that new, the themes and attitude were and its impact can't be ignored.

CHRIS: did you really think 'Tyranny Of Souls' was that good? as for myself, this list would be next to impossible to put together, but just off the top of my head, as far as Terrorizer goes--i.e albums reviewed--i'd have to go with the following, in alphabetical order: Angels Of Light 'Everything Is Good Here/Please Come Home' Arcturus 'The Sham Mirrors' At The Drive In 'Relationship Of Command' Beyond Dawn 'Frysh' Celtic Frost 'Monotheist' Clutch 'From Beale Street...' Earth 'Hex' Emperor 'Prometheus' The Gathering 'If_Then_Else' GYBE! 'Lift.......' and 'Yanqui...' Isis 'Panopticon' Jesu 'Jesu' Eyvind Kang 'Virginal Co-ordinates' Katatonia 'Viva Emptiness' Mars Volta 'Deloused........' Mastodon 'Remission' and 'Leviathan' Neurosis 'The Eye Of Every Storm' Nevermore 'Dead Heart In A Dead World' Oxbow 'An Evil Heat'+ 'The Narcotic Story' Primordial 'Gathering Wildness' and 'To The Nameless Dead'(possibly this decade's most improved metal band) Radiohead 'Kid A'(yes, it was reviewed in Terrorizer and even made the writers poll in 2000) Rammstein 'Mutter' Reverend Bizarre(first album) Septic Flesh 'Sumerian Daemons'+'Communion' Sigh 'IMaginary Sonicscape' and 'Gallow's Gallery' Silver Mt.Zion 'Horses In The Sky' Tomahawk 'Mit Gas' Zeni Geva '10,000 Light Years' Runners Up:Mayhem(last album, which probably should be in the first list), Cathedral '7th Coming', Halford 'Resurrection', Colonel Claypool 'Bucket Of Bernie Brains', Diamanda Galas 'Defixiones', Deftones 'White Pony', Immortal 'Sons Of Northern Darkness', the list seriously goes on, KAYLEE: you serious about Rev.Bizarre 'Crush The Insects'? i thought that was the most redundant thing they ever released. i sold it after 2 weeks. the previous two albums were absolute gold. i slagged it over at digitalmetal.com when i was writing for them. i was just so disappointed, esp by the upbeat tracks.

Nasum should definately be included, Pig Destroyer too. Mastodon, Either Leviathan or Crack The Skye. Perhaps Desipised Icon for accidentally creating "deathcore".

that's exactly why i included it. the first two albums, good as they are, is simple doom metal done slow and traditional. when you hit play on "Doom all over the world" and that WTF??? reaction showed a band not afraid to do whatever they want.

^^yeah, but they went from 'simple slow and traditional doom' that was good, to a song like 'doom all over the world', which is a horrible Cathedral rip off to my ears. just thinking about this song makes me cringe. the 'humour' is totally misplaced on that album, even for them. each to their own. i thought it was rubbish personally.

As you know, I loved Crush The Insects, thought there was a real lurid, triumphant old-fashioned surge to it and I relish any band with such a pervasive Cathedral influence as they had on that LP. Love 'Cromwell', love 'Fucking Wizard', I'm glad they didn't just wallow in posturey gloom like so many doom bands do. But they were never just having a laugh, there was always total conviction and audacity at work. I'd also argue a place in the end of decade lists for The Puritan. I know it's two EPs, but it's also one killer debut. And yeah I love 'Tyranny Of Souls', it's stuck around my stereo longer than most recent albums, and it's got a handful of classic contemporary heavy metal songs on it. It's no 'Chemical Wedding', but then what is?
