Editorial:
There are few bands who occupy the strange position that Cannibal Corpse do. Hard, fast bastions of brutal, bloodied death metal, deeply entrenched in the workmanlike world of USDM’s second wave, one of sweat-pants and split-ends, and yet also a household name of sorts with well-documented, tabloid-friendly controversies. They’re a touchstone to any who wade through extreme metal’s murky marshlands, from the pouting scenester to the patch-laden devotee of a thousand unreadable logos. Having just hit the road with pinch-heavy megastars Children Of Bodom, we entreat them a whole new generation, knowing full well that they’ll see in this band what we do: something sick, something evil and something utterly awesome. In part two of the Grindcore Special we turn our gaze primarily to the tribal schisms, the sub-genres within the sub-genre and tempt forum fury by not putting the expected albums at #1 and #2 in our Essential Albums of the US. The feedback from the first part has been staggering and props go to those uncredited on the page; none of this would have been even remotely possible without the early guidance of Ian Glasper, James Sherry, Shane Embury and Kevin Sharp. James Hoare, Deputy Editor PS. My first issue as a writer was the last Cannibal Corpse cover, exactly 40 issues ago. I’ve seen some shit like you wouldn’t believe.
