While this is an anti-climax of the grandest proportions, my entirely subjective, completely inconsequential two cents are finally here for your reading displeasure. Never fear! I, Jillian McFadden Mikkelson, love a good bandwagon and I've decided to jump on this particular convoy if only 'cos the coolest, most completely radabonzical deputy editor on the planet (LOVE YOU James Hoare!) is manning the steeds and valiantly leading our crew towards the land of Badassery. While I did actually submit a top twenty, everything from fourteen onwards was basically a throw away so I thought I'd make this installment ten. Why you ask? Lately I've been brushing up on my South American death metal (for exciting reasons you'll eventually find out!) and I've been genuinely astounded by just how much awesome has been passed over. After logging at least a day or two on myspace and out of the probably hundred or so bands I gave ear time, Mortem is easily my favourite discovery to date. Well, discovery is somewhat misleading considering they've actually been a band since 1986. After finding the whole of their first full-lengeth, 'Demon Tales', calling this band a hidden gem would be a masive understatement. Read more »

With the announcement that Candlemass are going to be playing the entirety of 'Epicus Doomicus Metallicus' at Roadburn next year I thought there would be no better time to provide some expert testimony as to exactly how incredible the whole event really is. I had the pleasure of speaking to Neurosis at the festival last year and as you'll read, they were feeling the wicked vibes too.

I'll be the first to admit I have a shitty sense of humour. Though I can appreciate the odd high brow academic joke, it's generally vulgar and juvenile, meaning it usually doesn't take more than a good fart to make me laugh. I, like every other urban hipster in their late twenties, also love to hate.

If you'd asked me how I thought Slipknot would do after I saw them ten years ago in a tiny club in my hometown of Edmonton, Alberta, I probably would have said not very well. Why? I thought their tunes were mediocre, their costumes were stupid and the masturbating clown needed to be shot. What's that? You have a dj? Lame. Well, doesn't matter what I think because the jury has spoken.

I have never danced as hard and as shamelessly as I did last night for Faith No More. It was fucking sensational (word of the weekend). No really, I fully lost it. So much so that I took to hugging strangers. Gotta spread the love! They played nothing but hits. Everyone around us was screaming along to every word.
